Common Questions

FSA & HSA FAQs

Can I use my FSA or HSA for GLP-1 medications like semaglutide?

Yes. Physician-prescribed GLP-1 medications including semaglutide (compounded and Wegovy) and tirzepatide (compounded and Zepbound) are eligible HSA and FSA expenses. Your Rivas provider documents the medical necessity at your visit, so you’re covered.

Do I need a Letter of Medical Necessity?

Yes. Rivas accepts HSA and FSA debit cards at all 15 clinic locations and for telehealth visits. You can also pay out of pocket with a standard credit or debit card and submit your itemized receipt to your HSA or FSA administrator for reimbursement.

Can I pay with my FSA or HSA card at checkout?

Medical weight loss consultations, prescription medications (semaglutide, tirzepatide, phentermine), and B12 injections are typically eligible. We provide itemized invoices for your records. Aesthetic treatments like Emsculpt Neo are generally not HSA/FSA eligible. Always confirm with your plan administrator.

What is the difference between an HSA and an FSA?

An HSA (Health Savings Account) is available to individuals with a high-deductible health plan. Funds roll over year to year and the account stays with you even if you change employers. An FSA (Flexible Spending Account) is employer-sponsored and typically must be used within the plan year or you lose the funds. Both can be used for eligible medical weight loss expenses at Rivas.

Are Face · Mind · Body treatments FSA/HSA eligible?

Some Face · Mind · Body treatments may qualify when they are medically indicated and prescribed by your provider. For example, pelvic floor therapy with Emsella for urinary incontinence may be eligible. Purely cosmetic treatments are generally not eligible. Consult your plan administrator and your Rivas provider for specifics.

Can I use my FSA/HSA for telehealth visits?

Yes. Telehealth medical consultations are eligible medical expenses. Your $195 initial telehealth visit and ongoing monthly visits can be paid with HSA or FSA funds when prescribed for a medical condition.

My FSA expires soon. Can I use it before the deadline?

Yes. If you have FSA funds expiring at the end of your plan year, don’t let them go to waste. Your initial visit, weekly visits, and medications are all eligible expenses. Book your visit before your deadline to start putting those dollars toward your health.

Is Ozempic FSA or HSA eligible?

Ozempic (semaglutide) is FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes, not weight loss. If you’re looking for GLP-1 medication for weight loss, Rivas providers prescribe Wegovy (semaglutide) and Zepbound (tirzepatide), both of which are FSA and HSA eligible when prescribed by your provider. All three medications contain the same active ingredients used in diabetes management, but Wegovy and Zepbound carry the FDA-approved weight loss indication.

Is tirzepatide FSA or HSA eligible?

Yes. Tirzepatide, including compounded tirzepatide and brand-name Zepbound, is FSA and HSA eligible when prescribed by your provider. Rivas offers both compounded tirzepatide (shipped to your door via telehealth or administered in-office) and Zepbound prescriptions that you fill at your pharmacy. Your provider determines which option is right for you.

Does Rivas accept insurance for weight loss?

Rivas does not bill insurance directly for weight loss visits. However, if you choose a name-brand medication like Wegovy or Zepbound, your provider can write a prescription that you fill through your pharmacy, where insurance may apply. HSA and FSA cards are accepted for all Rivas services and are often the most straightforward way to use your health benefits for weight loss.

FSA and HSA eligibility varies by plan. Rivas Medical Weight Loss does not guarantee reimbursement or eligibility for any specific FSA or HSA plan.
